Jones International University Provides $1 Million In Scholarships To Colorado School District

Teachers to Receive Support in Continuing Their Education for Advanced Degrees

DENVER (March 16, 2009) - Jones International University® (JIU®), the first fully online university to receive accreditation, has launched an innovative program in tandem with a Colorado school district that will provide up to $1 million in scholarships to over 100 teachers within the District who want to advance their careers as well as complete continuing education requirements.

The effort is being conducted through JIU's School of Education, the Douglas County School District and the Douglas County Educational Foundation. The Douglas County School District is located south of Denver.

Jones International University students, including Douglas County School District teachers who participate in the university's scholarship offer, can work online to obtain academic degrees, including graduate or doctoral degree programs. Given the time constraints facing most working professionals – including teachers – having the ability to complete continuing education requirements in an online setting allows for maximum flexibility and convenience.

On March 14, full scholarships for either Doctorate or Masters degrees were awarded to two Douglas County School District teachers, one from the elementary school level and the other from the secondary level, as part of the Golden Apple Awards, an annual event hosted by the Douglas County Educational Foundation and school district to honor teachers. About 1,100 teachers from 71 schools in the district were nominated for the award. That list, narrowed to representatives from each of the 71 schools, was then pared to 18 finalists. The two recipients were chosen from that field of 18 finalists.

"Many people who choose to continue their education in order to advance their careers actually end up enhancing their lives at the same time," said JIU Chancellor Glenn R. Jones. "Jones International University offers an unparalleled online educational experience that provides essential tools and strategies for career starters, career changers and career advancers. The partnership between JIU and the Douglas County School District and the Douglas County Educational Foundation will help their teachers further their training and education efforts, particularly in these challenging economic times."

"Jones International University is an outstanding partner of the Douglas County School District," said Jim Christensen, superintendent of schools for the Douglas County School District. "Over the past few years, we have worked with JIU on a number of initiatives. We believe this new $1 million scholarship program will provide great opportunities for our teachers for their ongoing educational and training needs. We are very thankful to the remarkable staff at Jones International University for their leadership and impressive support."

Jones International University, the first fully online accredited university, offers a range of certificate, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs taught by an international faculty.

"Jones International University offers teachers and other adult learners state-of-the-art online curriculum from some of the brightest minds around the globe that make up our international faculty," said Terry Rawls, vice chancellor at JIU. "We look forward to the opportunity to help Douglas County teaching professionals be successful and excel in their careers. We believe Douglas County students will be the ultimate beneficiaries of this program."

JIU is unique in that I had several classes that were either taught by, or included students from, different parts of the world. Such an environment provides a learning experience that is unparalleled in that it widens one's perspective, not only academically, but about life in general. I can honestly say that going to JIU is one of the best decisions I have ever made!
